MCA designed and managed the complete and concurrent renovation of three existing fire stations, Station 15, 24, and 30 (shown here). All stations had to be converted from old style dormitory type crew quarters with group showers and restrooms to new style quarters with individual sleeping rooms, showers and restrooms, in keeping with the needs of contemporary mixed-sex fire crews. Other common program elements included seismic and ADA upgrades, remodeled locker rooms, bathrooms, utility rooms, hallways, kitchens and equipment rooms. Each Station presented its own unique set of challenges. Unforeseen conditions were discovered under Station 15, such as the presence of a live spring and the basement walls of the previous fire station. As a part of the seismic upgrade of Station 43, the apparatus bay, which was discovered to have not been built even to its original design, had to be essentially re-built in place. The original GC selected for all three projects went bankrupt mid way through the construction period. Through it all, the MCA team worked cooperatively with the City, Fire Chiefs and crews to complete the projects on time and within budget, without compromising quality and functionality of the improvements.
